Cheesman Canyon
Current Conditions
Flow: 477cfs
Clarity: Excellent
Water Temperature: High 50’s to 60’s
Major Food Organisms: Midges, pale morning duns, caddis, and sporadic yellow sallies.
Hatches: Midges, pale morning duns, caddis, and sporadic yellow sallies.

14 Day Forecast: Look for above average flows and good hatches of midges, pale morning duns, and blue-winged olives. Flows should stay in the 300-500 cfs range for a while, especially with the North Fork flowing under 100 cfs.

Tips and Other Information: Currently the flows are above average, but very conducive to some excellent fishing. All the water is coming off the bottom of Cheesman Reservoir, therefore, the releases are ice-cold. Fishing improves as the water warms throughout the course of the day. Denver Water will continue to drop Cheesman Reservoir to conduct repairs on the dam. Last week alone, they dropped the reservoir level 5,000 acre feet, (with a flush of 900 cfs) and the lake continues to “drop with a purpose”. Anglers can expect hatches of midges, caddis, pale morning duns, blue winged olives, golden stoneflies, and yellow sallies. Effective patterns have been #20-22 Mercury Midges, #22-24 Mercury Baetis, #18-20 Barr Emergers (PMD), and #22 Mercury and Sparkle Wing RS II’s. Fishing has been strong in the a.m. with good mid hatches, then tapers mid-morning, and really “kicks back in” when the blue-winged olives begin to hatch around 1:00 p.m.. Anglers can expect a good midge hatch around 4:00 p.m., with a lot of suspended fish eating pupa. Dry fly fishing has been productive on overcast days with pmd’s and blue-winged olives. Amy’s Ant has been fooling some very nice rainbows fished tight to the bank, rocks, logs, and areas where the substrate is dark. Don’t leave home without “Amy”!

Effective Patterns: #14-16 San Juan Worm, #14-16 UV Scud, #14-16 Hunchback Scud, #14-16 Stalcup’s Scud, #14-16 Oliver Edwards Stonefly, #18 Mercury Caddis, #18-20 Top Secret Midge, #20-22 Mercury Black Beauty, #18 Mercury Red Pheasant Tails, #18-20 Rainbow Warrior, #18-20 Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tail, #22-24 Mercury Baetis, #20-22 Sparkle Dun, #20-26 Parachute Adams, #16 Elk Hair Caddis, #20-22 Cannon’s Midge Cluster, #22 Stalcup’s Trico, #20 Snowshoe Duns, and #20-22 Griffith Gnats.
