The Blue Quill Angler and casting instructor Dan Wright will present our annual Spey Casting Clinic on Sunday, August 4, 2013.This is the last spey class we will be doing until Spring 2014. Dan is our Director of Schools and Guide Coordinator, and is an International Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Master and Two Hand (Spey) Casting Instructor.
Dan has guided and fished for steelhead in Michigan’s Great Lakes tributary rivers, and has fished throughout the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia and Alaska. In addition to Spey casting clinics and private instruction, he has taught saltwater casting clinics from Florida to Mexico. Dan has chased trout, freshwater bass, stripers, permit, bonefish, tarpon, and steelhead—his favorite fish—and guided fly fishers for more than twenty years.
The clinic is open to fly fishers who want to learn both Spey and Switch rod casting techniques. We’ll start with the foundation cast and build from there. (Scandinavian casters wonder why crazy Americans have so many names for various Spey casts—in their view, only one Spey cast exists, and everything else is just a repositioning of the fly line in preparation for that cast.) In our introduction, we’ll take a look at some fundamental differences in Skagit, Scandinavian, and more traditional Spey techniques.
We’ll learn the Forward Spey, or Switch Cast; the Snap T, C, and Circle Casts; the Double Spey; and the Single Spey. We might take a look at the Snake Roll, the Perry Poke, and other garnishments for the Spey Cast. We’ll introduce ourselves to these casts for both River Right and River Left, a necessity for successful steelhead fishing.
Spey rods and all necessary equipment will be provided for the class, but you should bring and learn to more efficiently cast your own Spey or Switch gear, if you have it. Pre-registration is required. Workshop participation is limited to 6 students to ensure the highest quality participation and coaching interaction.
The workshop cost is $150.00 per student
. We’ll start by 9 a.m. and finish around 4 p.m. Please bring your own refreshments and lunch. The clinic will be held in the Denver metro area, and directions to our casting site will be given upon registration.
