For the first time, the Blue Quill Angler is offering our customers a chance at some of the world’s best steelhead fishing. Dan Wright, Guide and Guide Coordinator and Director of BQA Schools, will lead a small group of fly fishers to northern British Columbia’s Z-Boat Lodge. Fly fishers have a choice of one of two different weeks for the adventure: September 8-14, or September 15-21.
The Z-Boat Lodge is on the main stem of the Skeena River, the highway to ocean traveling steelhead headed to tributary rivers such as the Kispiox, the Babine, the Copper (Zymoetz), the Bulkley, the Morice, the Sustut, and too many others to name.
We will feature Spey casting and Spey fishing on this six-night, five full days of fishing in September. Both sinking line and dry line “skating” opportunities are available in this weather temperate time of the steelhead season. The Z-Boat Lodge accommodations are private room and private bath arrangements, with the best of creature comforts and the wildest of outdoor experiences. The week will be limited to six friends and me, fishing hard, interacting comfortably with wild rivers and wild life, and resting easy in a wilderness lodge with good people.
Using jet sleds and unpowered craft, Z-Boat Lodge guides fish a number of the river’s tributaries local to Terrace, which is close enough to the ocean—only 40 miles distant—to practically fill the air with a smell of salt. Lodge owner Brad Zeerip is a long-time friend, dating from my days years ago of guiding for inland Great Lakes steelhead in Michigan. With his wife, Kim O’Black Zeerip, they have given the Z-Boat Lodge a reputation for adventurous high quality fishing and superb customer care. While the lodge guides are Spey casting fanatics, they certainly are willing to work with the single hand caster, too.
Terrace is located on the Trans-Canada Highway (Yellowhead Trail-Hwy 16). The drive along the section of the Highway from Terrace to the ocean is called by the National Geographic Society “one of the 10 most beautiful in the world.”
Here is an excerpt from the Z-Boat Lodge
Z-BOAT LODGE RIVER GUIDES has the flexibility to fish many different rivers in the Skeena Valley, offering an eight-month season with outstanding salmon and steelhead fishing. Our guides are licensed to fish all four sections of the world-renowned Skeena, plus its famous tributaries: the Copper River, Kalum River, Ecstall River, and others. You will find steelhead, Kings (Chinook), Coho (silvers), sockeye, pink, and chum salmon; rainbow, cutthroat, dolly varden, and bull trout all native to the watershed. The steelhead and salmon are some of the largest in the world! The Nass River and its tributaries, the Kitimat River and other remote coastal rivers are exciting options.
The relatively mild weather of the September date is early to middle of the season for these intense fish, and gives us a chance to cast for them with both wet and dry fly. I’ve caught no fish, from ocean or freshwater, that is more exciting than a Steelhead on a dry fly!
For those of you local to Colorado, I plan a number of Spey casting instructional sessions over the coming summer; more about that later.
