According to our instructor, “The Bug Man” Jeff McCarthy, “Fly fishing is not just plopping oneself into a stream and waving your rod around. One must know what trout are eating at any given time in order to be successful catching them on a consistent basis.” Jeff is armed with a master’s degree in entomology and has years of experience as a biology teacher. He has taught aquatic entomology classes for the Blue Quill Angler for over 19 years and to put it to you straight… Jeff knows his bugs!

Throughout the duration of this course, the student will study, in depth, the life cycles of midges, mayflies, caddis flies, stoneflies, freshwater crustaceans, dragonflies, damselflies, and other food organisms important to the diet of trout. This class will help the student to understand the different types of aquatic life that trout feed on in a manner that will make them more successful in fly selection and more effective at creating realistic imitations at the vise. It will also aide the student in understanding hatches; how to predict them and fish them effectively.

This is an advanced level course that will benefit every angler and we are very pleased to have the ability to offer you Jeff’s level of expertise.

The class is four evenings from 6:pm to 9:00pm with an additional field study that is held on a Saturday decided upon by the class.

Four consecutive Tuesdays March 30, April 6, 13, 20, and a Saturday Field day.
